Satirical biographical sketches of six English types of the 1840s, each accompanied with an engraved portrait. "No. III, Nicholas Twang, Esq., The Guitar Player," after learning to play the drum, "attracted the attention of the owner of the caravan which contained - or rather professed to contain - the pig-faced lady, and he was at once engaged for the performance of a series of solos on the Chinese gong; which is usually resorted to as a finale to an exhibition, for the purpose of drowning out the complaints of the company" (pp.7-8). Other profiles include "Barnaby Bluster, Esquire, The Beadle," "Solomon Scrub, Esq., The Street-Sweeper," and "Joseph Jarvis, Esq., The Cad."
