In 2000, for only the second time in US history and the first time in generations, the seemingly naive question asked by high school students became a reality: a mismatch of the popular vote and the decisive Electoral college vote. As we now observe another instance, these relics take on more meaning as it may well be that the 2000 election marks the beginning of a new level of broad multi-partisan cynicism and distrust of our "system". Nader's participation in 2004 illustrates his determination to offer a choice outside the two parties, and he is admired or loathed by people who'd otherwise embrace his policies depending on their view of the question of whether he was the spoiler in 2000.
